Chairman DeMarco Statement on Pittsburgh Port Authority Refusal to Work with Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement Officials

The Port Authority cannot decide to ignore or thwart enforcement actions by the same federal government that helps to fund it. Their job is to get commuters from one place to another while following the law.

Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald must instruct PAT Executive Director Katharine Kelleman to stop meddling in immigration law. Her job is to run the buses, not the Department of Homeland Security.

Coming as this does during the start of a national election campaign, Ms. Kelleman’s remarks are an obvious attempt to politicize what is supposed to be a politics-free authority only now climbing out from under the debris of political scandal.

Fitzgerald and his staff need to tell Ms. Kelleman to get the buses to people on time. Fix the light rail system. Leave immigration policy to the federal government.
